Salford City have signed Di’Shon Bernard on a season-long from Manchester United.

The highly-rated 20-year-old has made one senior appearance for United, starting against Astana in last season’s Europa League.

Bernard, a centre-back, featured against his new teammates during a 6-0 victory for United’s U21 side in the EFL Trophy last month.

Bernard Ready for the ‘Challenge’

Speaking to the club website, Bernard is keen to get his first taste of senior football.

“I’m really happy to be here, it’s a different experience for me, the first time I’ve been in men’s football and I just want to get going,” he said.

“It’s going to be much more challenging for me. Obviously 23s you’re not challenged physically but now we’re going to be playing against men so it’s going to be a big, big test for me.

“For me, my defensive attributes are good, my passing through to midfield and even to the striker would benefit the team quite well.

“[My hope is] to get as many points as I can to be honest and on a personal level just develop as a player.”

Bernard Joins at Turbulent Time for Salford

After coming through the Manchester United academy, Bernard made 19 appearances for the U23s and helped the Red Devils achieve promotion to the Premier League 2 Division One last season.

The defender joins Salford at a turbulent time. Despite lying fourth in League Two, manager Graham Alexander was sacked earlier this week and will be temporarily replaced in the dugout by Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

Salford will look to extend their unbeaten start to the season against Port Vale on Saturday where Bernard will be eligible to make his debut.

Manchester United have also confirmed two further loans for young players. Max Haygarth has linked up with Brentford B, while Jacob Carney has dropped into non-league to join Brighouse Town.
