Manchester United have announced that a Jose Mourinho contract extension has been agreed. Mourinho’s current contract expires in 2019, but the Red Devils will hang onto the 54-year-old into 2020, with an option for another year.

Jose Mourinho Contract Extension Confirmed

Mourinho’s first season at Manchester United was subject to mixed reviews. The Red Devils drew matches far too frequently and finished 6th in the Premier League. However, League Cup and Europa League triumphs brought trophies and Champions League football back to Old Trafford. This season, United sit second to rivals Manchester City in the Premier League table  – a sour taste for many fans. However, they are in a strong position to finish in the top three for the first time since the Sir Alex Ferguson era. They are also still competing for both the FA Cup and Champions League.

In recent times, Mourinho has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford. Whether his departure was imminent or upon terminating his contract, Paris Saint-Germain was his likely destination. But the Portuguese remains adamant that he will remain with Manchester United. He recently told reporters:

“If you want to ask me directly if I see myself next season at Manchester United, then I say I see myself here. As I said when I arrived, I am going to leave when the club wants me to leave because I have no intention to leave at all.”

Mourinho reiterated on several occasions that he intends to remain with the club until he is no longer wanted. This should come as good news for Manchester United fans. Mourinho’s plan for the club comes closer to fruition as each month passes. The overall performance quality is much higher than in previous years. The quality of transfers coming into the club has improved in both ability and fit to the system. Jose Mourinho has Manchester United on the right track and deserves the time to see his vision through.
